The Rev. Msgr. Edward J. Scull, age 90, of Brookfield, the retired Pastor of St. Pius X Church in Fairfield, passed away peacefully, Friday August 26, 2016. Monsignor Scull was born on March 16, 1926 in Bridgeport, CT, son of the late Joseph and Marguerite Scull. He attended Saint Augustine School and Central High School in Bridgeport and was prepared for the priesthood at Saint Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield and Saint Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained to the priesthood by the Most Reverend Henry J. O’Brien, D.D., on May 3, 1951 at Saint Joseph Cathedral, Hartford. Monsignor Scull also did graduate studies in education at Fairfield University.
Monsignor Scull was assigned as parochial vicar at Saint Mary, Bethel and Saint John, Stamford parishes. He served on the faculty at Notre Dame Catholic High School in Fairfield and as Principal of the former Central Catholic High School in Norwalk. He was a priest in residence at Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in Trumbull and Our Lady of Fatima in Wilton. His first position as pastor was at Saint Gabriel Parish, Stamford, starting in 1963. In 1972 he was named pastor of St. Pius X Parish, Fairfield, retiring in 2002. He was appointed Prelate of Honor to His Holiness, St. Pope John Pau l II, in 1997. Monsignor also served on the Presbyteral Council and as Director of Retired Priests. In recent years, Monsignor had been living and assisting at Saint Joseph Parish in Brookfield.
The Scull family has a long history in Bridgeport, of which Monsignor was proud. It is documented that the first Mass celebrated in the city of Bridgeport was in the home of Monsignor’s great-grandfather, James McCullough, in 1830 with seventeen Catholics present.
Respects to the family were offered on Tuesday, August 30, from 4-8pm in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Most Rev. Frank J. Caggiano, Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport, on Wednesday, August 31 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield. Interment followed in Saint Michael Cemetery, 2205 Stratford Avenue, Stratford.
Monsignor Scull is mourned by his sister, Mary Anne Dolan and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Scull; a sister, Marguerite Cleary and brothers-in-law, Joseph Dolan and Francis Cleary and a sister-in-law, Veronica Scull.
